Over the past 2 months I have visited some fantastic exhibitions: 'Buy Art Fair', Manchester, 'Great Northern Contemporaray Craft Fair', Manchester, 'Artist & Designer Fair', Buxton, 'Handmade - Contemporary Craft Fair', Shire Hall Gallery, Stafford, 'Contemporary Open, 'Unit Twelve, Tixall & 'The First Cut', Manchester.
Below are some of my favourite pieces from the work seen and links to some of the artists in the shows...just in case you want to investigate further!
The First Cut
Manchester Art Gallery.
Friday 5 October 2012 - Sunday 27 January 2013
This is a fantastic exhibition; 31 international artists who cut, sculpt and manipulate paper. the work is so varied in scale from a piece that is barely 2 cm's in height to a piece that you walk through. Its incredible the range of work the artists have produced from a humble piece of paper...in its purest form to using books, paper bags, printed materials...really exciting and experimental work.
There are giant sculptures inspired by far away galaxies that spiral from the wall, you can explore a walk-through forest of paper trees and marvel at miniature worlds that explode from vintage staple boxes or emerge from the page of a book.
Flocks of birds and butterflies cut from maps appear alongside artworks that feature dark fairytale imagery. Guns and grenades fashioned from paper currency and sinister silhouettes comment on social, political and economic issues. Would recommend anyone to go to visit this exhibition.

HANDMADE
SHIREHALL GALLERY, STAFFORD
I visited this exhibition at the Shire Hall Gallery, Stafford with a dual purpose, one to look at the work and two to hopefully find designers for our own Contemporary Artist & Designer fair. The work was really professional, a wide range of disciplines, some amazing pieces. I spoke to lots of designers about their work. My favourites were onmypinna, beautiful stitched textiles using old fabrics and linens, even bought a piece of work, sadly not for me but a friend in Australia. Also really liked the work of Alys Power, jewellery made out of old watch faces. Found many designers to contact for our Contemporary Artist & Designer fair.
....take at look at the work of the exhibitors to inspire you

Contemporary Craft Open Exhibition
1st Nov - 25th Nov 2012
After the 'Handmade' exhibition at Shirehall I went straight on to another great exhibition of work at 'Unit Twelve', Jennifer Colliers wonderful gallery. The exhibition showcased the best in contemporary craft, from both amateur and professional, and was selected by Madebyhandonline and Craftspace. Again found more designers to contact for our fair...hope they can be part of ours!
The Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair, Spinningfields, Manchester
4th - 7th October
This is one of my favourite shows of the year to visit. Its wonderful to have a show as this in 'the North' rivalling 'Origin', London. We took the Foundation Degree in Contemporary Art Practice year 1 students and they were overwhelmed by the work. There's so much to see you don't know where to begin and then when youve finally worked out a plan of action and start to look you just wish you had loads of money so you could actually buy the work rather than just covet it...one day, one day!
The GNCCF showcases cutting edge contemporary craft to buy from over 150 selected designer-makers in ceramics, glass, jewellery, interior and fashion textiles, wood, paper, silver, metal, product design, print-making and more.
My favourites were Julia Jowletts metal work, Ruth Greens prints and Katherine Richmonds jewellery

BUY ART FAIR,
Spinningfields, Manchester
27 - 30 September
The Buy Art fair is a fantastic show at Spinningfields in Manchester. An amazing collection of inspirational work really making you want to buy loads of work and then go home and start being creative yourself! So many talented artists were there. I spoke to several gallery owners & artists who said selling was difficult now with the financial situation at present in the UK but that people do still buy art which was good to hear as we continue to encourage our students to become artists & designers.
Some favourite artists:
Elizabeth Magill
www.atelierrosegray.co.uk/blue-hold/
www.artnet.com/artists/elizabeth-magill/
If I could have left the Buy Art Fair with one piece of work it would have been this piece 'Blue Hold' by Elizabeth Magill, so beautiful (was £1,080 so just a smidge out of my budget!) A lithograph consisting of 9 colour plates, the layers and marks were fantastic.
Anna Marrow
www.gasgallery.co.uk/collections/anna-marrow
Beautiful prints with bold splashes of colour & delicate hand-drawn lines, scraps of text and collages of photographic imagery. Her works are hand-printed screen prints- which are often hand finished with delicate touches of glitter, water colour, acrylic and freehand drawing.
Freya Cummings www.freyacumming.co.uk/ & freyajanecumming.blogspot.co.uk/ I love her quirky prints and the use of colour and imagery in her screen prints | |
Charlotte Cornish www.charlottecornish.co.uk/ Really exciting and vibrant paintings and hand-made prints which are bold, vibrant abstract works, exploring the relationship between colour and emotion. Her work is greatly influenced by her travels around the world to places such as Macau and Mexico. |
