Art students brighten up Buxton with flowers and festivals murals

Live project: Buxton Town Team, ‘Decorating Buxton’, BED Art & Design year 1

The Brief: this was bought to us as an Art Department by Buxton Town Team, led by Tina Heathcote, (from the Buxton & Leek College board of governor) .
The task was to design decorative panels for a public location in Buxton at the back of the famous Crescent on George Street. The hoardings were required to brighten up the area behind the crescent that was looking looking very dull and tired. Buxton Community school and a group of GCSE students were also involved in the project led by Bernadette Decent.

The project was based on Buxton as a theme; architecture, park, festival . The brief required a strong floral theme combined with simplified imagery. The clients wanted it to be colourful, bold, striking. They wanted it to incorporate floral images to highlight 'Buxton in Bloom' and the buildings to relate it specifically to Buxton.

Henri Matisse The Sheaf 1953

There is currently a major exhibition in London at the Tate of Matisses work; 'Matisse The  Cut outs'
http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/henri-matisse-cut-outs
so we took the initial client brief and linked to the current exhibition taking the Tate Modern by storm: 'Matisse: Cut outs' and the street art inspired by Bansky and the students designed and created 9 panels.
The panels are 8ft x 4ft and the students from the Art & Design BED yr 1 group did a fantastic job in designing and painting them.....

Take a look at the photographs below of the project in its development -  from location...to starting to paint...to the grand unveiling.

The Location: Back of the Crescent, Buxton.

Starting to paint: Monday 09th June

3 days later.....Thursday 12th June

The grand unveiling: to come....Tuesday 15th...watch this space

Art students brighten up Buxton with flowers and festivals murals
'ART and design students from Buxton and Leek College have put their talents to good use in brightening up a corner of Buxton for visitors to enjoy.
A group from the Leek School of Art travelled to the spa town to join Buxton Community School teenagers in the project led by Buxton Town Team to brighten up hoardings on George Street while building work is being carried out on the famous Crescent. Using paint supplied by sponsor the Buxton Crescent Hotel and Thermal Spa Company, the group worked to the brief of Flowers and Festivals to come up with some eye catching designs featuring iconic Buxton buildings including the famous Opera House.
Civic dignitaries gathered this week for a grand unveiling of the paintings heralded by Town Crier Bill Weston MBE who said: “Today belongs to the students who have given their time, skill and effort to produce this artwork that will give pleasure to all who pass along this way.”
The students and their course leaders were joined by High Peak Borough Mayor Alan Barrow, Mayoress Sue Barrow and leader of High Peak Borough Council Caitlin Bisknell for celebration cake and coffee in Buxton and Leek College’s Devonshire Dome after the painted hoardings were officially unveiled.

The college artists, who are all studying for their BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design, made sure their creations will withstand Buxton’s winter weather by using outdoor paint coated with special varnish'.

Leek School of Art's boards - veiled!

the big un-veil!
The boards look brilliant - the BED 2 Art & Design students have done a fantastic job of designing and creating the boards.

A brilliant 'palette cake' kindly bought by Tina Heathcote, especially commissioned for the event. As Tina siad in her speech every celebration needs a cake and this lovely event was to celebrate the art students work (from Leek School of Art & Buxton Community School); their wonderful art and their commitment and involvement in the project. Tasted yum!!

Len Tildesley, Principal of Buxton & Leek College makes a speech at the celebration event following the un-veiling.
