'The Big Show' University of Derby

Had a great time at the Teachers Evening at the University of Derby being shown around 'The Big Show' by the lovely art & design team. The work was amazing, really exciting, creative and professional.
'The annual Big Show is an exciting, visually inspiring celebration of the work of final year students from the University’s arts design and technology courses.

It is a unique opportunity for the students to showcase their designs, portfolios and creations to an audience of employers, representatives from the creative industries, family and friends, schools and colleges as well as potential and past students

The School of Art and Design (follow this link to website)

This School delivers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in areas such as fine art; photography; fashion; textiles; visual communication (graphics, illustration, animation), and film and video production. All of the programmes focus on encouraging students to explore their personal creativity. We encourage them to be original and develop their individuality and personal voice, in order to prepare them for an exciting career in the creative industries'.
Great to see work by an ex Leek School of Art student - Jos Swinnerton. Jos Swinnerton completed his Foundation Diploma in Art & Design in 2010. Jos recently won 'The Young Designer Award' at the St Andrews Charity Fashion Show has provided young aspiring designers a platform to promote their designs. Fresh from winning this year’s award, Jos Swinnerton opens up to The Saint on his five-piece collection, his overall FS experience and where he sees the future of his label - http://www.thesaint-online.com/2014/03/interview-yda-winner-jos-swinnerton/

The theme we were told to explore was 'Bright Young Things', which was a film based on the novel 'Vile Bodies'. This was a story based on the 1920s and 30s that explored Bohemian and eccentric influences. The inspirations I took from this subject was the 1920s silhouettes with accents of Bohemian detailing. A result of this combination created a 'Doctor Who' styled collection, specifically the fourth Doctor, Tom Baker. As a collection I explored the colour palette of strong earthy colours that are identified as 'vintage', but the further develop this to fit the eccentric theme I pursued a tonal palette for most of the outfits and then explored the flamboyance of the theme. - http://jswinnerton.carbonmade.com/projects/5191892#1

  1. University halls of residence are often in or near the campus itself, so travel costs to and from the university are minimal. As a general rule, older universities tend to have much more housing stock.
